Pope Benedict Tweets

Pope Benedict tweeted his first message over a year ago, when the Vatican launched its news information portal. Then a Vatican official tweeted daily during Lent.

But today, in a big news event, the Pope clicked to send another tweet. About an hour later, Vatican officials tweeted several other messages. The messages are sent simultaneously in 8 languages: English (twitter.com/Pontifex), Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Polish and Arabic. The total number of followers of those 8 accounts is now over 1 million, having gained over 100,000 in about the last 5 hours.

The Pope doesn’t actually type the messages, but Vatican officials write them on his behalf, culling them from his speeches, homilies, or catechism lessons.
